Vesta is an asteroid with a mean diameter of about 330 miles. Comprising an estimated 9% of the mass of the entire asteroid belt, it is the second-most-massive object in the belt after the dwarf planet Ceres.
About a billion years ago, Vesta lost around 1% of its mass in a collision that left an enormous crater occupying much of its southern hemisphere. Debris from this event has fallen to Earth and is a rich source of evidence about the asteroid. It is one of the very few meteorite samples that is paired to a specific asteroid.
